What is a Kokopelli?
Discover the cultural significance and symbolism of the Kokopelli

The Kokopelli is an iconic figure from Native American culture, particularly among the Ancestral Puebloan peoples of the Southwest. Often depicted as a humpbacked flute player, this figure carries deep spiritual and cultural significance that has endured for centuries.
Ancient petroglyphs and rock art throughout the American Southwest—from Arizona to New Mexico—feature images of Kokopelli dating back over a thousand years. These depictions have been discovered in canyons, cliff dwellings, and sacred sites across the region.
The Kokopelli is traditionally associated with fertility, joy, and the blessings of the harvest. In many Pueblo cultures, Kokopelli is believed to be a trickster figure—a spirit that brings both mischief and good fortune. The flute in his hands represents music, celebration, and the joy of life.
According to legend, Kokopelli traveled from village to village, playing his magical flute and spreading happiness, fertility, and prosperity wherever he went. Communities would welcome his arrival as a sign of good times ahead and abundant crops.
