Tooth Extractions
Thank you for trusting Kokopelli Family and Cosmetic Dentistry with your care. To ensure a smooth recovery after your tooth extraction, please follow these guidelines.
1Immediate Care (First 24 Hours)
- Bite firmly on the gauze pad placed over the extraction site for 30–45 minutes. Replace as needed.
- Rest and avoid strenuous activities for the first 24 hours.
- Do not rinse, spit, or use a straw, as this can dislodge the blood clot and cause dry socket.
- Apply ice packs to the outside of your cheek in 15-minute intervals to reduce swelling if any.
- Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication as directed.
2Ongoing Care (After 24 Hours)
- After 24 hours, rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water (½ teaspoon of salt in 8 oz of water) 2–3 times a day.
- Continue brushing and flossing, avoiding the extraction site.
- Stick to soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and smoothies (without a straw). Avoid hard or crunchy foods.
- Refrain from smoking or consuming alcohol for at least 72 hours.
When to Call Us
Contact our office if you experience excessive bleeding that does not stop with pressure, severe pain that is not managed by medication, signs of infection such as fever, swelling, or foul odor, or if you suspect dry socket (persistent pain and empty-looking socket).
